Agrarian Structure

These are maps covering various aspects of Argentine agrarian structure. They were produced as results of the research project Modes of agricultural frontier expansion, land use change, and impacts on agricultural labor demand. Argentina, 1980–2016, which I carry out as Adjunct Researcher at CONICET. In the repository you can find the following maps along with their methodological documentation.

Relationship between fires and agricultural frontier expansion: this map allows visualizing two processes: 1) land use changes and 2) a typology of fire hotspots. It uses a swipe panel to visualize both layers. Data were extracted from NASA fire hotspot information and ESA Climate Change Initiative LULC rasters.

Urban Accessibility in Argentine Cities (2018)

This is a high spatial-resolution map that quantifies walking-time access to various services (schools, health centers, food supply, banks, and ATMs) for the 32 main urban agglomerations in Argentina. It was built in collaboration with the Bunge and Born Foundation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Some details of its construction can be found in this document.

Color Palette Analyzer

Many important decisions go into building a data visualization. One of them — choosing a scale to map values to colors — is far from trivial. Since scales act as a kind of "interface" between data and our brains, it is important to choose a scale that does not unnecessarily distort that perception. This property is called "perceptual uniformity."

This tool analyzes color scales for perceptual uniformity using the CIE Lab or CAM02-UCS color space. A perceptually uniform color scale should have relatively constant ΔE values between consecutive colors.

Packages

eph package

I participated in developing the eph package, a toolbox to facilitate the processing of microdata from the EPH (Permanent Household Survey). The package plays a fundamental role in democratizing access to data published by INDEC, enabling independent conclusions beyond those published in official reports.

Since EPH data is one of the main sources for analyzing social problems in Argentina, the package enables not only academic and journalistic research but also contributes to the formulation of evidence-based public policy.

App inspired by "Martín Fierro ordenado alfabéticamente"

It is often said (rightly so) that the avant-garde is dead. However, there are texts and authors who seek to dialogue with the ghost of the avant-garde (as Tabarobsky would say). One such text is "Martín Fierro ordenado alfabéticamente" and one such author is Pablo Katchadjian: he takes the Martín Fierro (la ida) and rewrites it without adding anything — he simply sorts the verses alphabetically and publishes it. The book is pure form. But not just linguistic form (which it also is): it is pure procedure, pure artifact. And as such it is reproducible. What other texts could we sort alphabetically? All gauchesque poetry, certainly. Epic poetry, given its length, seems quite suitable.

This app seeks to make Katchadjian's procedure replicable and scalable. It sorts the lines of poetic texts alphabetically. Text can be loaded from a URL, uploaded as a file, or pasted directly.
